What is the Carlton Cabinet?
A School Council is a group of pupils who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and to improve their school.
Every year in September, each class elects two representatives to represent them in the School Council. Our School Council gives pupils the opportunity to make all their voices heard and feel part of the whole school community. They help to make decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events.
The Carlton Cabinet aims:
· To meet regularly to discuss their views and be heard
· To organise whole school and class events
· To organise charity days
· To make sure the school is a happy and safe place for all of our pupils
· To make sure pupils have a place to voice their concerns, opinions, and thoughts
· To encourage all pupils in school to suggest ideas and improvements
· To ensure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon
The Carlton Junior Academy’s Choir was first established in 2008 and have performed in a range of concerts. We use the range of harmonies in the Choir to perform a range of diverse vocal performances, from a range of genres and time periods. Carlton Juniors’ school choir is open to all year groups and is always well attended. Over the last few years, the choir have performed at local care homes, at family picnics and at the Albert Hall in Nottingham.
The choir also travels to Sheffield Utillita Arena to perform at the Young Voices concert alongside 3000 other children. Young Voices brings together children from across the country, to large arenas to sing together in what is described as the biggest student choir in the world.
Mrs Worrall helps children to prepare for their big day during weekly rehearsals. “The children are always amazing! They have to learn so many songs and dances, all off by heart! Their enthusiasm and enjoyment shines throughout, and it’s such a fantastic experience.”
Inspiring Leaders is a partnership of Multi Academy Trusts based in the East Midlands with the commitment to improve the life chances of over 30,000 pupils across 70 schools, including those who are most disadvantaged in the region. Each year children from our academy have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by attending a conference at Nottingham Trent University. They contribute to discussions and are challenged around the issues of poverty, consumption, climate action, peace & justice, and leadership as we continue to drive our theme of ‘Sustainability into Action to Transform Our World’. On their return to the Academy, the inspiring leaders will design and run a project creating a legacy for the future of our community and beyond. So far our inspiring leaders have reduced the amount of paper being used in school, ensured that lights and appliances are turned off, had a big swap of books and toys and introduced a recycling rail of school uniform.
Taking part is a huge benefit for our pupils as they will:
- Develop personal leadership skills through attending inspiring keynote inputs and expert led workshops.
- Meet and learn alongside pupils from other schools across the region, forming networks and creating friendships.
- Design a project to be delivered back in school linked to one of the UN sustainability goals.
- Raise their aspirations and gain a sense of empowerment for effecting change.
- Visit a high-performing, well-respected, national university to understand more about how they could go to university when they are older.
Residential Opportunities at Carlton Junior Academy
There is no doubt that school residential memories can last a lifetime and creating unforgettable experiences is part of our offer here at Carlton Junior Academy.
Learning outside the classroom has the power to solidify classroom learning, develop key skills and relationships which, in turn, support young people in their journey through life.
Year 4
Year 4 are invited to take part in an overnight residential trip. The experience focuses on key aspects of team-building, social skills and facing new challenges. We have previously visited Conkers but are always looking for new and exciting places to visit.
Year 6
Year 6 pupils build on their Year 4 experiences by participating in a 3 day residential to Kingswood – Dearne Valley. This residential incorporates outdoor adventurous activities with team-building and social skills to give a truly rounded experience for our pupils.
